Guide to Cat Grooming

Guide to Cat GroomingCats are neat freaks by nature. However, even though your cat seems to groom themselves constantly, they still need a bit of assistance every now and then. Grooming is much more than just making your cat look good, it is also ensuring they are in good health as well. Here is a cat owner’s guide to cat grooming.

Brushing

Cats need to be brushed in order to ensure their fur is in top condition. Short-haired cats should be brushed once a week, while long-haired cats need to be brushed about every three days or so. As far as tools you need to use, short-haired cats require either a bristle brush or fine-toothed comb, while long-haired cats need either a wire brush or wide-toothed comb.

Bathing

Cats really don’t need to be bathed on a regular basis, but bathing them once in a while can help keep their coat healthy. In fact, bathing them too often can actually strip a cat’s skin of their natural oils. Be sure to brush your cat’s coat before bathing in order to remove any mats and loose hair. Use tepid water and cat shampoo when bathing and dry them off thoroughly with a towel afterward.

Claw trimming

Your cat’s claws should be trimmed about every 2 weeks or so, since having long claws can be an issue for some cats. The best way to clip your cat’s claws is by using cat-friendly clippers. Be sure to clip their claws parallel to the flat part of the claw, clipping the white part of the claw only. You want to avoid clipping the pinkish part of the claw, as this area contains nerves and veins.

Ear care

Your cat’s ears should be inspected once a week to look for wax and debris and to ensure there is no infection within the ears. The outer ears should have no bald spots and should be light pink in color, while the inner ears should be pale pink in color with no odor and no debris.

I really didn’t realize that these things needed to be done. I don’t have a cat currently, but if I do get one, I will remember this.

I wonder if cats ears are as difficult to clean as dogs. My dog hates it when I clean his ears, even though they are in desperate need.
