How To Build a Cat Birthing Box

If you have a pregnant cat, you want to make sure they remain inside long before the kittens are due. When the time gets close for the kittens to be born, you will know because your cat will begin to become restless and root around in rags, clothes or anything else she can find. At this point, it is time for you to prepare a cat birthing box, which is also called a kittening box. The sole purpose of this box is to provide your cat with a warm and safe place for them to give birth.

Select the Location

Choose someplace in your home where there is little traffic. Ideally, a room that is quiet and dark and able to be closed off is ideal. Also, select a location that is away from cold air or drafts. A dresser drawer, closet, or someplace similar is a good idea. You can use a plastic container or cardboard box to create the actual nesting box.

Setting Up the Interior of the Birthing Box

You need to make sure there is plenty of room inside the birthing box and you should place layers of soft bedding inside. You need the sides of the box to be high enough so the kittens won’t be able to roll out and hurt themselves.

Plastic containers are perfect for this, but any large container will work. Make sure to put air holes in the box and a space large enough for the mother cat to get in and out. If you are planning to use a cardboard box, make sure it has a top to ensure the kittens remain warm.

Additional Considerations

After the kittens are born, you are going to have to change the bedding quite often so make sure you have plenty of old blankets, towels and rags on hand. Also, place a litter pan, water and food near the birthing box, but not inside of it. This will allow the mother cat to leave and rest a few times a day. You should also keep a flashlight nearby to check on the new family.

What to Avoid

It is not a good idea to use open weave baskets or laundry baskets for kittening boxes. A kittens head will be able to fit through the majority of the slots in these items. Instead, you want to use something that is totally contained. If you are creative, consider building your own nesting box.

It can be an exciting time when kittens are born. However, you want to make sure that the babies and mother cat remain safe. Use the tips here to create a birthing box that will provide this sense of safety.
