5 Things You Didn’t Know About Cats

Think you know all there is to know about cats? Well, you may be wrong. While many of us are obsessed with our kitties, few of us actually know that much about them. There are loads of hidden secrets about our feline friends that will surely surprise you. So, without further ado, here are just five of them.

  1. When cats purr, they’re not always happy

When you hear your cat purring, it likely makes you extremely happy. After all, purring is the sign of a content kitty, right? Well, maybe not, actually. The truth of the matter is that cats purr for a whole array of reasons. It’s no accident. You may find that your kitty is actually insecure or upset when they make this noise. Eek! Check out their body language to see how they really feel.

  1. You should never feed your kitty chocolate

Okay, we all know that you should never feed your dog chocolate, but what about cats? Well, similarly to their canine friends, cats tend to be highly allergic to cocoa. That spells out bad news for them! If you feed your cat some of this stuff, it could well make them very sick or worse result in death. The next time you have a chocolatey treat, be sure to keep it away from your pet.

  1. Cats need positive reinforcement

Disciplining your cat when they are naughty will do no good whatsoever. While you may think that they will ‘learn their lesson’, nothing could be further from the truth. Cats only respond to positive reinforcement. That means that you need to reward them and treat them when they do something right. However, you should never punish them when they are naughty. There’s no point.

  1. They love to sunbathe

Since cats originate from the deserts, they have a lust for the sunshine like no other animal. It’s only logical that these kitties would adore being outside and catching some rays. Make sure that your pet has somewhere they can bask in the sun. You don’t know just how much this small change will improve their mood.

  1. A group of cats is a ‘clowder’

Do you know what a pack of cats are called? While most people have no clue at all, the official term is actually quite weird. They are called a ‘clowder’. Um, okay. Say it fast — a clowder of cats. It’s a real tongue-twister and really quite hard to get right.

I used to have a cat that would purr constantly and I never thought anything other than she is just a happy kitty (which she was!) I never knew that they would purr when they weren’t happy too! Good to know and something to teach the kids when it come to animal safety.
